Critique of the Young Earth Theory

I recently attended a seminar that presented the young-earth position through ten lectures by four speakers. This essay draws the ten together. It sets out what the seminar claimed, what conventional science and theology agree with, where the disagreement lies, and what the seminar’s own evidence shows when it is checked. The individual essays contain the details and references; this one gives the shape.

1. What the seminar argued

The position has four parts, and the lectures divided among them:

  1. Genesis 1–11 is historical narrative and its days are ordinary days; the earth is about 6,000 years old (lectures 1, 9, 10).
  2. The Flood was global, catastrophic, and recent, and it deposited the sedimentary rock record in a year; its aftermath produced a single Ice Age and cut the Colorado Plateau (lectures 2, 6, 7).
  3. Darwinian evolution is a weak theory — the fossil record, the human–chimpanzee comparison, and dinosaur soft tissue are held to undermine it (lectures 1, 3, 10).
  4. Living things are engineered, with built-in sensors and logic that track the environment; adaptation is not selection, and biology should be reinterpreted from an engineering standpoint (lectures 1, 4, 5, 8).

Parts 3 and 4 were where most of the seminar’s energy went, and the president announced that ICR will now emphasize them over geology. Part 1 was assumed more than argued. Part 2 is the only one that bears directly on the 6,000-year claim.

2. What is common ground

More of the seminar than an outsider might expect is uncontested:

  • The rock observations. The six megasequences, the Cretaceous highstand, the mechanism of sea-level change by ocean-ridge volume, the marine-then-terrestrial fossil order, the cold slabs imaged in the deep mantle, the Wilcox sands, the Missoula floods and their landforms, the glacial evidence of Michigan and the Great Lakes, the lowered ice-age sea level and the land bridges — all are in the mainstream literature, which is where the speakers got them.
  • The biology. Cavefish lens apoptosis and sensory compensation, ape laughter and grief, slow dinosaur incubation, scaly tyrannosaurs, Cretaceous grasses, marine larval biology, phenotypic plasticity, mutation-rate variation, stress-induced mutagenesis, and the reality of soft-tissue residues in dinosaur bone are all correctly reported findings.
  • The theology. That creation reveals God, that Scripture is authoritative, that humans bear God’s image and have worth independent of ability, and that Jesus and Paul cite Genesis as true are shared by every Christian party, including the theistic evolutionists and old-earth creationists the president debated.

The seminar consistently presented these agreed points as if they were embarrassments to the mainstream. They are not; they are the mainstream.

3. Where the disagreement lies: rate

The Flood geology lecture put it plainly: geologists say “I love your data, not your interpretation.” The dispute is not what the rocks show but how long they took. The same holds across the seminar. The mechanism the geologist gave for the “progressive flood” — hot new ocean floor displacing water, then cooling and sinking — is the conventional mechanism for Phanerozoic sea-level change, run in one year rather than 500 million. The catastrophes the Grand Canyon lecture appealed to (Missoula, Mount St. Helens) are mainstream catastrophes. The question is whether the whole record is one such event.

Every piece of evidence the seminar offered to fix the rate at “fast” can be examined. When examined:

Evidence offered for a short timescale What it shows on inspection
Cold slabs at the base of the mantle (2) Predicted by thermal conduction: a 100-km slab takes ~300 Myr to warm through; the imaged slabs are evidence for slow subduction
Dinosaur proteins and vessels (2, 3) Real, but fragmentary and cross-linked; 4,500-year-old bone yields intact collagen and sequenceable DNA, and no dinosaur bone ever has
Flat contacts, no erosion between layers (2) True at the chosen contact; the same canyon has paleokarst with 400-ft channels, buried valleys, angular unconformities
Thick, rootless, flat coal (2) Rooted seat-earths and upright stumps are standard; 200 ft of coal is ~2,000 ft of peat
Scabland landforms on the Colorado Plateau (6) Five of six form by ordinary differential erosion; the “ripples” are tilted bedrock ridges, the “whirlpool” basins are weathering pits; “water levels” follow the dip of the strata
Little river, big canyon (6) The pre-dam Colorado’s sediment load removes a canyon’s volume in under 100,000 years; dated lava dams poured into an already-cut canyon
One Ice Age, warm ocean (7) Glacial-age deep ocean measured at −1 to 0 °C; stacked tills with interglacial soils and reversed-polarity units; ice cores with hundreds of thousands of counted layers
Rapid adaptation in cavefish, finches, moths (1, 4, 5) Rapid change is mainstream; the genetics show mutation and selection on standing variation, different routes in different caves, broken genes

None of these fixes the rate at “fast.” Each is consistent with, and several are quantitative evidence for, the long timescale.

4. The evidence the seminar did not engage

The features that most directly fix time within the rock column were not mentioned in any lecture:

  • Radiometric ages from a dozen independent decay systems, cross-checked against tree rings, varves, ice cores, coral bands, and speleothems; the Hawaiian-Emperor chain, whose ages increase with distance at the rate GPS measures the plate moving today.
  • Fossil reefs, evaporite basins, chalk, and paleosols — deposits that require standing water, evaporation, biological production, or exposed land, at many levels.
  • Dinosaur nests, hatchlings, trackways, burrows, and termite mounds at many levels — animals living on stable surfaces in what the model treats as a year of tsunamis.
  • The absence of humans, domesticated animals, flowering plants, grass, whales, and modern fishes from the levels where a flood sorting by ecology would have to put them.
  • The organic carbon in sedimentary rock, roughly ten thousand times the mass of the living biosphere.
  • The written record: the model places the Flood in the middle of Egypt’s Old Kingdom and the glacial maximum, with sea level 120 m lower, in the Middle Kingdom, whose harbors sit at present sea level.
  • Cosmology and astronomy altogether — starlight, stellar lifecycles, the cosmic microwave background — which the president’s first lecture deferred and no later lecture took up.

The rocket-and-dust framing of the final lecture, which directs attention from geology to creatures, directs it away from this list.

5. Internal tensions

Several of the seminar’s claims work against each other:

  • The Flood mechanism (2) releases enough heat to boil the oceans roughly twice over — acknowledged as unsolved in the model’s own literature — and the Ice Age (7) then requires that same warm ocean to persist for centuries to supply snow, while the paleoclimate proxies say the ice-age ocean was near freezing.
  • The Flood lecture (2) has the present mountains rising after day 150; Genesis 8:4 has the ark resting on the mountains of Ararat at day 150.
  • The president (4) repudiated the “mutations only lose information” argument as indistinguishable from Darwinism and dismissed Answers in Genesis as “theistic selectionism”; the cavefish lecture (5) then relied on broken oca2 and insulin-receptor genes.
  • The engineered-biology lectures (1, 4, 5) say organisms track their environment; the cavefish lose their eyes in a lit aquarium and surface fish keep theirs in the dark, so the trait is inherited, not tracked.
  • The pronghorn and grass papers (3, 4) were used as evidence while their million-year dates were waved away.
  • The Missoula floods (6) were the template for Flood erosion; they are dated to 15,000 years ago and happened dozens of times.
  • The candle-catastrophe argument (9) says the past cannot be known without an eyewitness; the speaker’s own torch left a puddle, which is how catastrophes are found, and independent clocks that agree are the evidence there was no torch.

6. The theology

The seminar’s theological claims fall into two groups.

Claims that are common Christian ground and need no critique: the authority of Scripture, general revelation, the image of God, intrinsic human worth, the reality of the Fall and the cross.

Claims presented as settled that are intramural disputes:

  • The days. The lexical point is sound: yom numbered and bounded by “evening and morning” means an ordinary day, and the day-age reading is the philologically weaker alternative. But days with evenings and mornings before the sun exists (days 1–3) were flagged by Origen and Augustine as the reason not to read the sequence as chronology; Genesis 2:4 uses yom for the whole period; day 7 has no evening and morning. The stronger non-young-earth reading is “day means day, and the seven days are the author’s frame” — which concedes the lexicon and denies the genre conclusion.
  • Genre. Genesis 1–11 uses narrative verb forms; whether it is chronicle is disputed by Hebraists (Collins’s “exalted prose narrative,” Walton, Waltke, Longman) in light of its structure and its Mesopotamian parallels.
  • The Reformers. Calvin taught accommodation — Moses wrote in the language of ordinary appearance, and “he who would learn astronomy, let him go elsewhere” — and Westminster limits perspicuity to what is necessary for salvation.
  • Death before the Fall. Romans 5:12 concerns human death; Aquinas held that animal nature was not changed by man’s sin; Psalm 104 counts predation among God’s good provisions.
  • A first pair. Population genetics rules out a single genetic pair, not a single recent genealogical pair; Catholic teaching since 1950 and evangelical scholars such as Swamidass hold a historical Adam within an evolved population.
  • The Flood’s extent. “All the earth” is used regionally elsewhere in Genesis; a real, judgment-bearing, regional Flood has a long conservative pedigree (Ramm, Walton, Longman).
  • The 6,000 years. The figure comes from summing genealogies that Scripture itself uses with gaps (Matthew 1; Luke 3:36) and that differ by ~1,400 years between the Hebrew and Greek texts. The Bible gives no single date.
  • The Nephilim as the reason for the Flood, and the Hamitic assignment of modern peoples go beyond the text; the latter continues the “curse of Ham” tradition.

Historical corrections. The deep-time chronology was built by Christian geologists — Steno, Buckland, Sedgwick, Miller, Silliman — before Darwin; the young-earth “Scriptural geologists” lost the argument among believers in the 1830s. The expanding-universe model came from Lemaître, a priest, against Hoyle, an atheist. “Atheistic chronology” does not describe who built the chronology. Ranked races were constructed by Linnaeus, Blumenbach, and the creationist polygenist Agassiz; Darwin argued for one human species and was an abolitionist; the seminar’s conclusion that there is one human race is the mainstream genetic view.

7. The engineered-biology program

The president’s five rules — capability is internal, assume engineering, solutions precede challenges, avoid explanations that would sound silly for a machine, organisms track their environment — overlap heavily with the mainstream “extended evolutionary synthesis” (Lewontin, West-Eberhard, Noble): organisms as active agents, plasticity, regulated variation. “Solutions precede challenges” is the Luria–Delbrück result of 1943. As a heuristic for finding control systems, the engineering perspective is already in use and produced good developmental biology in the cavefish and larvae lectures. What it adds is the claim that differential survival plays no explanatory role, and the fruit-fly adaptive-tracking paper offered as vindication is a replicated demonstration of natural selection. The one assumption that would distinguish the model—”no clunkiness anywhere”—meets the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the inverted retina, the disabled vitamin-C gene shared by primates, and shared retroviral insertions, which the model files under the Fall after the fact. And nothing in the program bears on the age of the earth; it would sit equally well in an old-earth framework.

8. A coherent critique of the 6,000-year theory

Drawn from the ten lectures, the critique has five parts, and it can be stated without disputing a single rock observation the seminar made:

  1. The rocks show what ICR says; geology explains them with the same mechanisms at slower rates. The dispute is rate, and the seminar’s evidence for a fast rate — cold slabs, proteins, flat contacts, coal, scabland look-alikes, a warm ocean — checks the other way on every item.
  2. The evidence that fixes the rate was not engaged: independent clocks that agree, reefs and evaporites and soils and nests within the column, the ordered absences in the fossil record, the carbon budget, and the written history of the Bronze Age.
  3. The model’s own mechanism has an unsolved heat problem that its literature acknowledges and the lectures omitted; the warm ocean it requires is contradicted by direct measurement.
  4. The biological program, whatever its merits, is silent on age. Rapid adaptation, engineered plasticity, and human uniqueness fit any date; the shift from rocks to creatures leaves the date where the geology left it.
  5. The theology does not require the date. Yom means a day; the frame need not be a chronology; the Reformers taught accommodation; animal death before the Fall and a regional Flood are old orthodox options; and the 6,000-year figure rests on genealogies Scripture itself treats as selective.

The seminar’s president said that creationists have been reduced to two sentences: “evolution is wrong, and the earth is young.” On the second sentence, the ten lectures supplied assertions and analogies but no evidence that survives examination, and left out the evidence that decides it.
